Description including Unit Aims

Introduce all students to social, industrial and research context of robotics and autonomous systems, especially research topics within the FARSCOPE CDT.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate social, legal and ethical impact of the use of robotics and autonomous systems across a range of potential applications.
  2. Critically evaluate the economic and industrial impact of the use of robotics and autonomous systems across a range of potential applications.
  3. State a selection of technologies and research areas within the field of robotics and autonomous systems and describe their potential impact.

Teaching Information

This unit will be delivered entirely through seminars:

  1. Given by external speakers from industry and other FARSCOPE stakeholders
  2. Given by members of the FARSCOPE college of supervisors on their research areas
  • 2hrs / wk (1 x 1hr external talk, 2 x ½ hr supervisor talks)

Assessment Information

20% : attendance of seminars (summative)

80% : extended (~3000 words) written assignment on case study in robotics and autonomous systems technology and context (e.g. assessment of a proposed new application or technology in terms of industrial and social impact). (summative)
