Description including Unit Aims

The two units in this level (Latin A1 and A2) are designed for those who have little or no previous knowledge of Latin. In them you will learn all the fundamental morphology and syntax of classical Latin. In addition, in A2 you will read a substantial amount of un-adapted Latin. At the conclusion of this course you should be able to read straightforward Latin texts on your own, with the aid of a reference grammar and dictionary.

Aims:

• To continue introducing students to the grammatical and syntactical structures associated with Latin
• To continue introducing students to Latin vocabulary, syntax, and morphology
• To continue developing students’ ability to read and translate Latin texts

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will

1. Be able to translate approximately an additional 250 Latin vocabulary items into English;

2. Be able to analyze more advanced elements of Latin morphology and syntax;

3. Be able to translate more complex Latin to English than at level A1

Teaching Information

Seminars and reading classes, grammatical instruction classes.

Assessment Information

1 x 45-minute class test (25%) and 1 x 2-hour exam (75%) [both assessing all intended learning outcomes]
