Description including Unit Aims

This unit comprises the year spent abroad by BSc students on the 4 year programme Economics and Politics. Students take the equivalent of 120 credit points with a partner institution abroad, where courses are taught in English.

The precise content of this unit will vary on an individual basis dependent on the host institution the student opts to study at.

The aim of the unit is to provide a student with an education in economics and/or politics at a leading institution outside the UK whilst also providing the cultural experience of living and studying in another country.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Specific learning outcomes will depend on the institution selected and the units studied. However, it is anticipated that students will also benefit from the following:

  • Experience of economics and/or politics in a wider non-UK context
  • Experience of different teaching and study methods and styles and the chance to extend knowledge beyond the units that are delivered in Bristol
  • Preparation for a career relating to international environments
  • The opportunity to broaden horizons and be immersed in a new and exciting environment.

Teaching Information

Dependent on the host institution and the units selected.

Assessment Information

Assessment will clearly depend on the host institution and the units of study selected. Students will be expected to select units of study at a level equivalent to University of Bristol Level 5. The mark for this unit will be derived solely from the translation of the marks achieved at the host university via algorithms agreed by the University of Bristol.

The ‘Year Abroad Mark’ counts as 10% towards the final degree classification.

Students can weight their year abroad studies towards either economics or politics but would not then be allowed to weight the same way in their final year.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. EFIM20020).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
