Description including Unit Aims

Students will develop their clinical skills and patient management at Bristol Dental Hospital in both periodontology and restorative procedures on adult patients. The student will keep accurate daily records of the treatment that they perform for patients under their care.

Aims:

Student Dental Hygienists will be familiar with aspects of advanced periodontal treatment and management. The student requires an appreciation of the interface between restorative treatment and periodontal diseases. Student dental hygienists should gain experience in temporary restorative measures.

A knowledge of the physiology of ageing and the management of problems associated with the care of the older adult are essential.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• Be competent at providing preventive oral care for the individual patient who presents with periodontal disease.

• The student on completion of this module will have completed all competencies related to non-surgical periodontal therapy.

• The student Dental Hygienists should be aware of the presentation of dental and oral diseases and disorders in the older adult and the range of psychological and social factors involved. Students should learn to avoid stereotyping older adult patients. The significance of conditions such as xerostomia, tooth wear, root caries and gingival recession should be understood.

• The student Dental Hygienist should understand the principles of implant therapy and be able to undertake implant maintenance.

Assessment Information

• Formative methods of assessment include written essay tests and case presentations.

• Students are also assessed on their application of knowledge and skills for each patient that they treat. All essays that are undertaken are allocated 30minutes and a guide of 600 words. All practical assessments are weighted 50%

• There are set clinical competencies which are determined by the General Dental Council, and Students must complete these set competencies in order to be put through to Finals. Clinical competencies are assessed using the clinical assessment criteria in the codes of practice. All staff teaching on the programme receives training in assessment so there is standardisation across the programme.
