Description including Unit Aims

This unit covers the promotion and maintenance of oral health for children. The student shall have an understanding of the general growth and development of the child and the recognition, preventive treatment and operative management of the common disease processes. It will encompass operative techniques permitted to be undertaken by the dental therapist in their role in liaison with other members of the dental team.

The unit aims are:

• To enable students to recognise active caries and oral disease and provide preventive care in children

• To enable students to be familiar with normal facial development, occlusion and the adverse effects of malocclusion on oral health.

• To enable students to be familiar with contemporary orthodontic treatment techniques and the limitations of orthodontic treatment.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module the student will:

• Be competent in the comprehensive dental management of the child patient and have knowledge of the specific problems associated with the restoration of teeth in the child patient.

• Have knowledge of the needs of the medically compromised child and seek advice where necessary.

• Have knowledge of the indication, contraindications and theory relating to primary tooth extraction.

• Have knowledge of the disorders associated with dental exfoliation and eruption.

• Have knowledge of diseases of childhood, the oral and dental diseases in childhood and soft tissue pathology in the child..

• Be familiar with the management of trauma in the primary dentition.

• Be familiar with normal facial development and occlusion and the adverse effects of malocclusion on oral health.

• Be familiar with contemporary orthodontic treatment techniques and the limitations of orthodontic treatment.

• Be familiar with the management of orthodontic emergencies.

Assessment Information

Summative

Written assessment – 2 hour written paper, four compulsory essay questions. Pass mark is 50%. Weighting 40% of total.

Clinical assessments on Manikin head simulator. 1.5 hours to complete a clinical assessment and written reflection. Pass mark is 50%. Weighting 60% of total.
