Description including Unit Aims

This unit is only taught on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.

The Unit aims to build on the previous years’ Personal and Professional Development (PPD) teaching. It provides an understanding of the NHS and Private contracts including Direct access to promote teamwork & management of clinical & business environments. To instill collaborative practice within the whole dental team.

Aims:

To provide an understanding of the requirements as a registrant for life long learning and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with relevance specifically to the working practice of the dental hygienist and the consequences of professional malpractice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate interpersonal communication skills that are effective in initiating an oral health care consultation
• explain, evaluate and apply principles of an evidence based approach to learning, clinical and professional practice and decision making
• describe the dental and wider healthcare systems dental professionals work within including health policy and organization, delivery of healthcare and equity
• explain the importance of and demonstrate appropriate contemporaneous record keeping
• demonstrate the ability to communicate risk appropriately and also to apply suitable interpersonal skills in the breaking of bad news and dealing with complaints
• describe and discuss the legal regulations surrounding the provision of dental care in the community and also the rights and the responsibilities of those working with, and employing, dental care professionals
• continue to develop Reflective Practice and its contribution to Continued Professional Development (CPD)
• understand your commitment to CPD (5 year GDC cycle)

Assessment Information

Formative:

Professional Development/Personal Development

Continuous assessment (CA) on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme, graded with immediate feedback to the student by clinical staff.

Reflective Practice – Each student to complete ongoing personal journal/log book/e-portfolio and opportunity to self-reflect and progress discussed with Tutors during and at the end of the Unit.

Students overall performance in the programme will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee.

Failure to comply with completion of formative assessments by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee. Any performance not completed or deemed unsatisfactory will be reviewed along with the students overall performance and may affect the students progression. Legal & Ethical remit explored in more depth including lectures from Medico-Legal staff in preparation for qualified professional career – feedback & question forum.

Seminars aid group discussions on preparing for employment and continued professional development on qualification, this encompasses leadership and management skills, accountancy law and teamwork.

CA at outreach and clinics lead by different service providers.

Summative:

This unit has no internal summative assessment. Personal and Professional Development topics can be assessed within Finals examinations for the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
