This module aims to develop an understanding of the technology and other issues related to advanced space systems, with an in-depth review of several topics as coursework. The technical issues and the underlying design requirements will be covered for three major systems areas: trajectories, advanced aspects of spacecraft design and human space flight.
Upon successful completion of this unit the student will be able to:
LO1 Calculate hyperbolic trajectories
LO2 Describe the perturbations affecting orbits and trajectories
LO3 Plan a planetary mission using orbit modelling tools
LO4 Create a link budget for a ground station
LO5 Design a spacesuit for a given environment
LO6 Compile factors influencing the design of space stations
LO7 Evaluate technical approaches for a single stage to orbit launch
LO8 Appraise rocket propellant feed and cooling systems
LO9 Evaluate spacecraft reentry body designs
