Description including Unit Aims

Students will work in groups of about five to develop a solution to a current research or technical problem, or to develop an outreach activity/demonstration showcasing condensed matter physics to the public. Problems will be selected from a subset of those posed by our partners and other members of the CDT. This activity will foster team work skills and encourage interactions with partners and within the Centre.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  • address new and unfamiliar technical problems.
  • work together in a team to solve a problem.
  • write up or present results.

Teaching Information

Unit will run over 10 weeks. Students will meet a facilitator every 2 weeks. There will be interaction with members of CDT and partners.

Assessment Information

The group will be assessed via a 30 minute group presentation (50%) and a 2000 word group report (50%).
