Unit Information

This unit will provide students with the opportunity to study advanced foreign language skills in the context of their Erasmus visit to the University of Bristol.

Students who choose this unit option will be placed in an existing class in the School of Modern Languages, appropriate to their level at point of entry. It is expected that this will be in French, German, Spanish, Italian or Russian.

It is expected that students will be native speakers of the language concerned and will have spent some time studying English at their home university.

The unit will include:

  • General communication skills
  • Academic listening and note-taking skills
  • Academic and sub-technical language
  • Academic reading and writing skills
  • Oral presentation skills
  • Cultural and social aspects of the language
  • E-learning opportunities

Your learning on this unit

By the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate their oral and written communication skills in the target language with a high degree of accuracy and fluency.
  2. Develop a sensitivity towards register and determine the nuances of the target language to be reflected in translation.
  3. Illustrate and reflect on their distinctive linguistic and cultural expertise by exploring its practical application in a range of educational and cultural contexts.

The level of the intended learning outcomes will be benchmarked against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as indicated in unit on which the student is simultaneously registered.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. MODL30035).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
