Description including Unit Aims

This unit is the culmination of the programme, and so here the students will demonstrate the culmination of their intellectual progression by applying and extending the skills and attributes they have learnt in the preceding units.

This unit is an extended piece of research work in an area of water or environmental science or management. Students will undertake a detailed and in-depth piece of research, which will include data acquisition, analysis and evaluation. Students will plan and design their research programme, informed by their literature review; in particular they will propose and test hypotheses, set aims and objectives, and devise and evaluate methodologies.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit successful students will be able to:

D1.1 apply the skills learnt throughout the programme to design and produce a coherent, relevant dissertation;

D1.2 demonstrate self-direction and initiative by acting (semi-) autonomously to plan and manage the research process;

D1.3 contextualise their findings within the broader scientific landscape;

D1.4 synthesize complex issues, and judge how to communicate them to an appropriate level of detail;

D1.5 summarize and critically evaluate their findings and apply this evaluation to recommend actions or further research.
