The figure of Prometheus has haunted the Western literary imagination ever since Hesiod first told of his attempts to outwit Zeus. His defiance of the gods and subsequent everlasting punishment led to him becoming a symbol of rebellion against authority, and his theft of fire for the benefit of humankind resulted in his association with the culture-hero or 'trickster' familiar from other mythologies. This unit will compare the two accounts of the Prometheus myth given by Hesiod with the tragedy of Aeschylus in which Prometheus is credited with responsibility for the development of human skills and sciences.
