Description including Unit Aims

Building on Social Work Studies 1 (Year One) it will provide students with a critical understanding of research, theory, policy and legislation relevant to four areas of practice (e.g. child abuse, impaired child development, mental illness, offending) and what is known about how most effectively to intervene. The unit will give students the opportunity to study in depth (necessary for effective assessment and intervention) and in breadth (social problems do not reflect the ways in which the welfare state is organised). It will include in-depth teaching and learning about two methods of intervention e.g. community work, cognitive-behavioural interventions, groupwork. Integral to the unit will be a focus on ethical and accountable practice, and the importance of inter-professional practice. The over-arching aim of this unit is to enable students integrate these various domains.
