Description including Unit Aims

Element 1: a. Introduction to dental injuries

• To introduce the students to the etiology epidemiology, classification and prognosis of dental injuries.
• To review and update the students’ knowledge on history taking, examination, investigations and non-accidental injuries in children.

Element 2: Fractures and luxation injuries in primary and permanent teeth

• To provide students with the underpinning knowledge to manage crown, root fractures and luxation injuries in permanent and primary teeth.

Element 3: Avulsion of permanent teeth

• To provide the students with the knowledge of the immediate, short and long term options for managing an avulsion injury in a child and young adult.

Intended Learning Outcomes

the etiology of dental injuries and factors that predispose to dental injuries

- the prevalence of dental injuries and their classification - the long term prognosis of various dental injuries - identifying non accidental dental injuries - biology of all dental injuries - emergency management of various dental injuries - long term management and outcomes for injuries to the permanent and primary dentition
