Description including Unit Aims

This unit will explore the relationship between women artists and modernism in the context of twentieth-century visual culture in Europe and/or America. The art of the era will be explored in relation to the cultural, social, institutional and political contexts of its production. Topics may include, but will not necessarily be restricted to, some of the following: Women Artists and Modernism; the Gender of Art; Models and Muses; the maternal nude; Artist Couples; Angels of anarchy; Performance and Identity. Artists to be considered may include, but will not be restricted to: Mary Cassatt; Berthe Morisot; Gabriele Münter; Marianne von Werefkin; Vanessa Bell; Gwen John; Marie Laurencin; Tamara de Lempicka; Sophie Tauber Arp; Hannah Höch; Claude Cahun; Lee Miller; Leonora Carrington; Leonor Fini; Frida Kahlo; Georgia O’Keefe; Lee Krasner; Eva Hesse; Cindy Sherman; Louise Bourgeois; Tracey Emin; Sarah Lucas, Lubaina Himid amongst other possible choices to be determined by the unit tutor.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will have developed: (1) a wider knowledge of the work and significance of 20th-century women artists; (2) the ability to analyse and generalise about issues of gender in art; (3) the ability to select pertinent evidence/data in order to illustrate/demonstrate more general issues and arguments; (4) the ability to derive benefit from, and contribute effectively to, large group discussion; (5) the ability to identify a particular academic interpretation, evaluate it critically, and form an individual viewpoint.

Teaching Information

1 x 2-hour interactive lecture per week.

Assessment Information

One summative coursework essay of 3000 words (50%) and one unseen examination of two hours (50%).
