A comprehensive study of the principles and practice of design and manufacture of composites to promote the understanding of the increased complexity of materials properties, and the behaviour and analysis methods for the design and manufacture of advanced composite structures.

Design and Manufacturing information and methods are presented in a series of lectures including illustrations worked examples and Case Studies. Practical understanding of basic manufacturing processes is also supported by laboratory and class demonstrations.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to:

  1. identify and understand the key issues and methods for the design and manufacture of advanced composite structures;
  2. apply the basic principles for conceptual design, manufacturability analysis, initial sizing, and preliminary structural analysis of advanced composite components.
  3. independently carry out conceptual design, manufacturability analysis, initial sizing, and preliminary structural analysis of advanced composite components.
  4. design, plan, and develop the build of an advanced composite material component; against a customer’s specific requirements.

Teaching details

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.
