Description

Each student will undertake an individual case-study project that analyzes the industrial impact of a chosen development in robotics and autonomous systems, e.g. a new technology or capability. Use cases and project objectives will be proposed by FARSCOPE-TU partners and developed in conjunction with FARSCOPE-TU supervisors in the lead-up to the project itself. Each project will be supervised jointly by a partner and an academic supervisor. Hardware development is beyond the scope for this short project, but modelling and simulation are expected, as is assessment of operational impact in an end-user setting.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Systematically identify aspects of contextual analysis for the deployment of a new technology: political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental (PESTLE) and ethical.
  2. Liaise with industry practitioners to capture key impact potential and limitations
  3. Identify and interpret appropriate documentary evidence on contextual impact: policy documents, industry forecasts, media coverage, regulations, and socio-technical academic studies.
  4. Construct system architecture models at appropriate levels of detail to inform analysis.
  5. Synthesize conclusions and recommendations for industry partners and researchers

Teaching details

This unit is primarily experiential. All projects will be supervised by an academic and industry partner. After an initial introduction to the problem, students will manage their own activities, with weekly supervisory meetings.

Assessment Details

50%: Presentation of findings (approx. half an hour plus questions to audience of peers and sponsors) [ILOs 1,4,5]

50%: Critical review of the potential impact, positive and negative, of robotics and autonomous systems in the context of the project (approx. 4-page report with set questioning brief and assessment criteria) [ILOs 1,2,3,4,5]
