Description

As civil engineers we are regularly required to work in design teams with architects and building services engineers. This course will teach engineers about the design process and how we work together with these other disciplines to realise our collective vision when designing buildings. It will teach students the “language” of architecture and core building services design. It will build their confidence in applying building design principles to real problems. This unit will introduce passive control of building environments and sustainability, architectural design philosophy, the industrial design process including design team meetings and the principles of safe building design.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, successful students will be able to:

(1) Undertake the initial stages of building design and identify the key roles within a design team.

(2) Be able to professionally communicate architectural and building services concepts and ideas, through words, drawings, photos, models and verbal communication;

(3) Suggest measures that could be adopted to improve a building’s sustainability and reduce its environmental impact.

(4) Produce design calculations for simplified architectural and building services cases.

Teaching details

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.
