Description

The aim of this unit is to provide learners with an understanding of the basic concepts used in the preparation of financial information and to introduce them to the forms of financial statements that managers need to be familiar with. In addition, the unit will introduce learners to appropriate forms of finance and the means of raising money to fund enterprises, the financial planning this entails, and forms of feedback and accountability to actual and potential fund providers. It is deliberately non-technical in nature, in other words it tries, as far as possible, to avoid unnecessary technical jargon or complexities.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of the unit a student will be able to:

  1. successfully perform a range of simple calculations relating to matters of scale, valuation, risk and profitability
  2. understand and / or explain a wide range of terms used in accounting and finance
  3. demonstrate the successful choice and application of known techniques to a range of given cases and situations
  4. analyse the management implications of 1 and 3 (above)
  5. evaluate the best future course of action (from a range of alternatives) arising from the successful achievement of 4 (above)

Teaching details

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions including lectures, tutorials, drop-in sessions, discussion boards and other online learning opportunities.
