Description

Overseas foundation students will be supported in the transition to living and undertaking education within the UK. There will be strong focus on development of study skills. The unit will provide students with learning opportunities for supported self-development in a variety of settings including small group tutorials and bespoke and closely supervised work experience in the health service environment. In order to ensure students achieve the required levels of knowledge and understanding for entry into medical and dental programmes students will receive teaching appropriate to clinical practice in numeracy and statistics, ethics, team working, and professionalism. Students will be required to self-reflect within a personal development ePortfolio updated throughout the year and will be supported in applications for places on medical and dental undergraduate programmes. Students will be encouraged to engage with Bristol Futures study skills and personal development portfolio opportunities, and undertake an online open unit (although this will not be mandatory).

Aims: To facilitate the continued development of personal and professional skills appropriate for a foundation student who is potentially eligible for a place on a clinical professional programme but is not yet in a position to demonstrate this. Specific aims include:

  • to develop an understanding of learning processes and individual learning approaches and styles
  • to encourage competent learning and self-reflective identification of individual learning needs
  • to provide support for overseas foundation students as they address their learning needs and learn to balance both study and external demands
  • to develop skills in the recording, organisation and management of information
  • to encourage students to work independently and to take responsibility for their learning
  • to develop numeracy skills and understanding of statistics relevant for clinical practice
  • to support students within work experience placements in their chosen clinical profession
  • to help students recognise their own physical and emotional needs and their responses to stress
  • to promote communication and social competence
  • to facilitate a commitment to ethical and professional behaviour
  • to provide training for multiple mini interviews and completion of UCAT.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the unit the students will be able to:

  1. communicate effectively
  2. develop the individual skills and processes required to learn effectively and independently
  3. demonstrate basic proficiency in numeracy skills and statistics appropriate for clinical practice
  4. understand and demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical responsibility
  5. collaborate and work effectively in single-discipline and multi-disciplinary teams
  6. engage with and assess the opportunities provided in the dental work placement programme
  7. demonstrate understanding of social and cultural norms within the UK
  8. successfully integrate skills acquired in work experience placements with academic skills
  9. demonstrate a basic understanding of health services in the UK
  10. reflect upon and show insight into own personal, academic and professional development over time.

Teaching details

Methods used will include:

  • lectures
  • Small group tutorial teaching
  • Workshops
  • Placements within one or more appropriate clinical settings with 1:1 and team teaching.
  • Self-directed learning

Teaching within the unit will primarily be within small group tutorials or workshops via blended learning (2-4 hours tutorials/week).

Work experience placements (4 hours/fortnight) will be arranged within appropriate medical and/or dental settings with 1:1 and team teaching.

There will be 1:1 tutor support available via blended learning; students will be required to engage with this.

Self-directed learning (3 hours/week) including personal reflection on activities, team working and building a portfolio are key to this unit.

There will be an expectation that students will attend 100% of teaching. Students should notify in advance if they are unable to attend. Missing teaching without reporting will trigger an absence form.

Assessment Details

Attendance will be monitored and is mandatory at all teaching and assessment sessions.

Completion of a personal ePortfolio: this will contain assessed diary and reflective entries about engagement with both the programme and the work placement programme (one entry (diary / reflection) expected per fortnight) and individual personal and professional development, teamwork and communication with others and the use of media in a healthcare context (10% of total mark as per summative assessments below). (1-10)

Formative assessments will include:

  • Online assessments relevant to taught sessions and required reading (1-10)
  • Assessment of learning styles e.g. Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic (VAK) (2)
  • Regular review and discussion of ePortfolio entries (1-10)
  • Regular numeracy and statistics tutorial self-tests (2, 3, 8)
  • One joint 30 minute presentation about professionalism and ethical responsibility in the provision of healthcare (1, 4, 5)

Summative assessments will include:

  • Completion of, and engagement with, the ePortfolio programme (30%) (1-10)
  • One essay question (1500 words) about the recognition and management of anxiety and / or stress (10%) (1, 2, 6, 7, 10)
  • One 90 minute closed book exam (combined e-assessment / short answer question paper) (30%) (1, 2, 4, 6-10)
  • One 60 minute numeracy skills and statistics written assessment (20%) (2, 3, 8)
  • Dental or Medical interview (must reach required threshold) (10%) (1-10)
