Description

This unit provides an opportunity to undertake a research project in an original topic under expert supervision. A wide range of projects addressing novel and important questions in the rapidly expanding field of transfusion and transplantation will be on offer. State of art facilities will be available at the Bristol Institute for Transfusion Sciences, the International Blood Group Reference Library, the Bristol Blood Centre and the University of Bristol Department of pathology and Microbiology for full-time or Bristol based part-time students. Part-time students normally undertake their project at their routine place of work, and have a local supervisor who will keep in communication with the Unit Director.

Aims:

  • To develop skills in searching literature and making use of the facilities available including electronic search engines.
  • To develop skills in the framing of a research question and constructing a research proposal
  • To gain experience of working collaboratively as part of a team
  • To develop manipulative practical skills and relevant techniques
  • To experience applying for ethical approval for studies involving human subjects/ samples
  • To provide practical experience in the collection, recording, interpretation, analysis and presention of appropriate data
  • To develop written and oral communication skills
  • To develop critical reasoning and analysis skills via the literature review and discussion of results

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

  1. Review critically all historical literature relevant to the research topic showing critical awareness.
  2. Obtain ethical approval, if necessary, to carry out the study, and understand its importance, showing the ability to act autonomously in planning and carrying out tasks at a professional level.
  3. Plan and perform an investigation of a well-defined research problem showing self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems.
  4. Document and analyse the results of experiments, even without complete data.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to draw conclusions based on experimental observation.
  6. Discuss critically the significance and contribution of the project in the context of existing work and where appropriate propose new hypotheses.
  7. Write up and present results in the form of a thesis and an oral presentation, communicating their conclusions clearly.
  8. Work as part of a team showing an understanding of health and safety and risk assessment.

This is assessed by Thesis and oral presentation

Teaching details

The student has an experienced research scientist as a laboratory supervisor. The supervisor keeps in contact with the Unit Director.

Assessment Details

Research Thesis of not more than 10,000 words

Oral presentation (Marks: literature review 15%, rest of thesis 65% oral 20%).
