Description including Unit Aims

An introduction to the basic anatomical organisation of mammals, including the human. Emphasis is placed on gross anatomy of the mammalian visceral systems (circulatory, respiratory, elimentary, urinary and reproductive) and the locomotor system (bones, joints and muscles of the spine and limbs). In laboratory practical sessions, anatomy is studied through dissection and using prosected specimens.

Aims:

The aim is to give an insight into the biological principles relating structure to function of the mammalian body systems. Students from a wide variety of backgrounds will learn basic anatomical terminology, and detailed gross anatomy of the mammalian visceral and locomotor systems.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

• Interpret and use basic anatomical terminology related to the visceral and locomotor systems

• Understand the principles behind the structure and function of visceral systems

• Understand the concepts underlying functional and structural adaptations across species in visceral systems and locomotor specialisations.

Assessment Information

Assessment is by:

• One 2-hour sessional written examination (65%) (Section A: 20 x multiple choice questions; Section B: Extended matching item (x6); Section C: 4 x short answer questions (mix of short notes, annotated diagrams, one sentence definitions, etc.)

• One 50-question multiple choice spot examination (30%) (resit spot in September exam period)

• Completion of e-biolab sessions (2.5%)

• Group potted specimen demonstration task (2.5%)
