This unit is only taught on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.

Year 2

This unit aims to expand knowledge from year one of study, specifically the unit Periodontal Disease – year 1.

This unit looks in more detail at the multifactorial nature of the periodontal disease. Encompassing more complex conditions, advanced treatment modalities and planning for refractory cases.

Students acquire awareness in seeking appropriate specialist advice and understand onward referral pathways. This allows recognition in their role in treating and maintaining dental disease and the concept of working as part of the dental team with regards to patient care.

Aims:

• To understand the complex multifactorial nature of periodontal disease
• To gain an understanding of acute and aggressive periodontal conditions
• To confidently maintain implants and treat peri-implantitis
• To be aware of treatment for non-responders and when to refer
• To gain an understanding of surgical procedures used in the treatment of periodontal disease
• To understand the use of topical and systemic antibiotics in the treatment of periodontal disease
• To understand the potential impact of poor periodontal health on the rest of the body
• To have an understanding of conditions such as gingival recession, hyperplasia, and abscess

Intended Learning Outcomes

• To recognise the need to monitor the outcome of non-surgical therapy and indentify those patients who do not respond and may need further treatment or referral.
• To understand the techniques which may be used by a specialist practitioner following this referral, such as the use of topical or systemic antibiotics or surgical intervention.
• To enable students to recognise acute oral conditions and treat them appropriately
• To enable students to understand the aetiology and clinical appearance of localised and generalised aggressive periodontitis and provide appropriate treatment, involving other members of the dental team if required.
• To be confident in the management of patients with osseo-integrated implants and to manage patients with peri-implantitis
• To be able to counsel patients as to the effect poor periodontal health may have on their general health

Assessment Information

Formative:

Advanced Periodontal Treatment & Planning/Acute & Aggressive Periodontal Conditions

Continuous assessment (CA) on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme, graded with immediate feedback to the student by clinical staff. Reflective Practice – Each student to complete ongoing personal journal/log book/e-portfolio and opportunity to self-reflect and progress discussed with Tutors during and at the end of the Unit.

Students overall performance in the programme will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee.

Failure to comply with completion of formative assessments by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee. Any performance not completed or deemed unsatisfactory will be reviewed along with the students overall performance and may affect the students progression. Summative:

This unit has no internal summative assessment. However, Periodontal Disease topics can be assessed within Finals examinations for the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
