Aims:

  • To develop existing clinical skills from year one and introduce operative techniques for adults and children
  • To ensure safe and competent skills to undertake Intermediate Clinical Practice
  • To introduce practical radiography techniques

Intended Learning Outcomes

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. To be competent in all restorative techniques within the scope of practice for a Dental Therapist
  2. To be competent in the re-cementation of crowns and placement of rubber dam
  3. To understand and apply the scientific principles, selection and use of dental materials appropriate to operative techniques
  4. Assess and manage caries occlusion and tooth wear, and where appropriate restore the dentition using the principle of minimal intervention maintaining function and aesthetics
  5. Be competent in the placement of preformed stainless steel crown and pulp therapy in primary molar teeth
  6. Accurately assess own ability and apply through reflective practice
  7. To be able to accurately follow a prescribed treatment plan and deliver treatment according to patients needs
  8. Contribute to relevant special investigations and diagnostic procedures, including radiography

  • Continuous Clinical Assessment logbook/portfolio (CCA) including Reflective Practice

Teaching will use a blended learning approach delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities. Students will be expected to engage with all learning.

Assessment Information

Summative assessment

There are two parts to the unit assessment both of which must be passed. Formative must pass assessments below must be completed before progressing to the summative assessment.

1. Clinical Radiography (25% of unit total)

Completion of practical logbook/ portfolio for clinical radiographs taken

2. Operative Techniques - adult and paediatric (75% of unit total)

An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) of operative procedures, 1.5 hours

Must-pass Formative Tasks

1. Continuous Assessment of Operative Techniques (adult and paediatric)

Completion of practical exercises on simulator units in Clinical Skills Lab. Students must carry out specified operative procedures to a required standard.

2. Clinical Skills Practical Assessment

Practical assessments on simulator units in Clinical Skills lab. Students will carry out specified adult and paediatric operative procedures from a written treatment plan.

Formative assessment

Students are supported in their learning by a variety of directed formative assessments in the Clinical Skills Laboratory with which they must engage within this unit. Overall performance will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee at regular meetings x 1 per term.

1. Continuous Clinical Assessment of Advanced Periodontal Instrumentation techniques

Clinical assessment and student reflection for each patient seen, graded with feedback from staff and patients by completion of CAFS e-portfolio

Marks obtained in formative assessments above do not contribute to the overall unit mark but failure to complete by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee, and may be a barrier to progression.
