Description including Unit Aims

This course aims to introduce students to a range of skills in independent reading and analysis of Latin literature. Students will also be introduced to the different resources available for self-directed interpretation; lexica, translations, commentaries and word search tools. Emphasis will be on close analysis of specific passages, exploring the different links between grammatical understanding of the language and literary appreciation of the work of art. Texts of moderate difficult will be chosen; authors might include Catullus, Cicero, Livy, Ovid, Virgil, or Cornelius Nepos.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate:

1. facility with a good range of Latin morphology and syntax;
2. the ability to translate from Latin to English a high number of vocabulary items;
3. the ability to use large lexicons and (where available) commentaries both for understanding and for literary interpretation;
4. the ability to interpret Latin texts with increasing sophistication;
5. explain and discuss critically the literary style, historical contexts, political or philosophical ideas found in the text set in the unit.

3 x one-hour classes per week.

Assessment Information

One 2000 word written assignment (50%) which will assess ILOs 4-5, and one 90 minute exam (50%) which will assess ILOs 1-5.
