Description including Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to enable the students to understand the natural and man-made hazards (e.g. earthquakes, tsunami, floods, explosions, accidents, human error) and the risks these pose to nuclear infrastructures and the society at large.

The course will be delivered in the context of civil engineering infrastructures.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, successful students will;

1. be able to demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of the hazards and infrastructure resilience,

2. be able to assess how infrastructure is vulnerable to natural and man-made hazards,

3. be able to carry out qualitative and quantitative risk analysis and identify measures to improve infrastructure resilience

Teaching Information

20 hours of lectures

76 hours private study

Lectures will be arranged to cover different hazards and risks to infrastructures. Students will supplement these by undertaking wider reading.

Assessment Information

Students will either undertake a critical review of risk management practice in a specific area or examine the impact of hazards on infrastructures in real contexts. They will present their findings in the form of a report that will make up 100% of the final mark (ULOs 1-3).

Please note that regular formative feedback will be provided through teaching activity such as simple exercises and optional activities.
