Description including Unit Aims
Students will have an understanding of the principles of oral surgery, oral medicine and oral pathology and be able to apply these principles while understanding the limits of their knowledge.
The unit aims are:
- To provide the student with the underpinning knowledge of general pathology, oral medicine and oral surgery. This includes the presentation and management of infective and non-infective oral diseases and recognition of malignancy and potentially malignant lesions in the oral mucosa.
- To know when to refer to other members of the Dental team, and understand how to make an appropriate referral.
- To understand the relevance of common human diseases in the management and practice of dentistry
- To describe the developmental anomalies of the dentition, the pathological aspects of dental extractions and systemic diseases affecting dentistry.
- To understand common oral surgery procedures and complications associated with the extraction of teeth in the primary and secondary dentition.
Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit the student will:
- Be familiar with the manifestations of common human diseases and disorders relevant to the practice of Dental Therapy including their investigation and management.
- Be familiar with the main medical disorders that may impinge on dental treatment.
- Be familiar with the pathological features and dental relevance of common disorders of the major organ systems.
- Have knowledge of the principles involved in inflammation, immunology, wound healing, neoplasias and the spread of infection.
- Be familiar with the physiology of ageing and the management of problems associated with the care of the older adult.
- Be competent in the extraction of primary teeth
- Have knowledge of the removal of visible primary tooth roots.
- Be familiar with the management of trauma in the primary and permanent dentition

Assessment Information
Summative
Written 1 hour multiple short answer paper. Pass mark 50%.
1 hour OSCE – 4 stations (15 mins per station).
Summative examinations have equal weighting.
Formative
Continuous formative assessment on clinic reporting and presenting patients detailing clinical oral findings.
