Description including Unit Aims

The Department of History of Art at Bristol has a substantial collection of prints, ranging from the Renaissance to the present day and, in medium, from engravings to etchings and lithographs. The collection is a valuable aid to teaching and research, but only a fraction is ever on display. The unit will introduce students to the collection and will cover the history and techniques of print making. Students will gain firsthand experience of researching and cataloguing individual works. This unit will culminate in a scholarly exhibition of prints drawn from the collection in a selection curated and presented by the students themselves.

Aims:

1. to introduce students to independent object-based research methods
2. to give students training in cataloguing and museum curating
3. to allow students to acquire expert knowledge in the history and techniques of print making.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. analyse and evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources;

2. deploy skills in curatorial practice, including independent and collaborative research, exhibition making and cataloguing;

3. communicate understanding of selected materials in written and oral formats;

4. demonstrate expert knowledge in the history and techniques of print making.

Assessment Information

One 2-hour exam (50%) [ILOs 1, 3, 4]. 1000-word print analysis (25%) [ILOs 1-4]. Assessment of exhibition (25%) [ILOs 2, 3, 4]
