This unit provides students with the basic analysis tools and design knowledge necessary to understand the behaviour, and design for the use of, simple mechanical systems and common machine elements. Their mode of application is supported by a broad overview of engineering design while introducing students to systematic methods for developing and accessing product designs.
Upon successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:
1. Identify (problem solving) a set of requirements for a product or system and distil (synthesis) these requirements into a Product Design Specification.
2. Generate (creativity) and systematically assess (evaluation) concept designs with respect to a Product Design Specification.
3. Describe (comprehension/understanding) the operation of, and perform calculations (application) on various machine elements.
4. Recognise and describe (comprehension/ understanding) the function of common parts and mechanisms.
5. Identify (problem solving) appropriate analytical solutions to model the behaviour of machine elements
Learning material including videos, notes and narrated lectures will be made available to the students support by online and, where possible, face to face interactions for problem solving.
Single summative examination assessing all learning outcomes. Feedback will be provided to students via formative assessment elements during the year.
