Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate and Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Surgical Skills 1 Unit has one core element with the following general aim: -

To provide students with the underpinning knowledge and skills to carry out minor surgical procedures under clinical guidance

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

• the removal of teeth with forceps and elevators
• the management of the complications of tooth extraction including:-
  • post operative pain
  • post surgical haemorrhage
  • dry socket
  • oroantral fistula with or without a tooth fragment within the antrum
  • fracture of the maxillary tuberosity and mandible
• gowning and gloving for a surgical procedure.
• placing patient drapes and preparing a patient for a surgical procedure.
• soft tissue flap design.
• flap closure and suturing techniques.
• giving a patient post operative advice following a surgical procedure.

The student will acquire the skills and attributes necessary:

• To be competent at gowning and gloving for a surgical procedure.
• To be competent at placing patient drapes and preparing a patient for a surgical procedure.
• To be competent at giving a patient post operative advice following a surgical procedure
• the management of the complications of the removal of teeth including:-
  • post operative pain
  • post surgical haemorrhage
  • dry socket

Assessment Information

This Unit will have three summative assessments:

1. Online assessment and MCQ (30%)

2. Final written examination (40%)

3. Assessment of performance in Clinical skills (30%)

Formative assessment

• Online activities will provide formative assessment

Summative assessment

Online assignments (length 2 000 words) and MCQ papers will provide summative assessment and contribute 30% to the final Element mark.

A final written (multiple short answer and essay) examination of 1 hour’s duration will contribute 40% to the final Element mark

Assessment of performance in the clinical skills sessions will contribute 30% to the final element mark
