Description including Unit Aims

The unit builds on the conceptual and hands on techniques introduced in the Introduction to Qualitative Research unit. It provides a philosophical understanding of the underpinnings of ethnographic and narrative research approaches in the social sciences with reference to educational research.

The unit addresses the analysis and interpretation of a range of ethnographic and narrative data approaches (participant observation, interpreting and analysing field notes, narrative interviews, artefacts and visual data).

Students will be encouraged to take a hands-on approach to data analysis in order to develop a reflexive and critical understanding of research design.

The unit aims:

  • To develop critical understandings of the key epistemological and methodological issues raised in ethnographic, narrative and arts-based approaches
  • To engage students in the current debates in ethnographic and life story approaches used in social science research across educational contexts
  • To develop students understanding of the challenges, limitations and diverse applications of ethnographic, narrative and arts-based methods
  • To extend students understanding of issues in relation to data analysis and different modes of representing qualitative data specifically ethnographic and narrative data sets

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to demonstrate that they are able to:

  • Develop an understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of ethnographic and narrative research across the social sciences.
  • Develop an understanding of the ways in which ethnographic, narrative and arts-based research are used as theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches in educational research.
  • Critique empirical studies with regards to both theoretical and methodological analysis.
  • Develop an understanding of the diverse modes of representing qualitative data, specifically ethnographic and narrative data
  • Understand how ethnographic, narrative and arts-based approaches can address specific challenges within a disciplinary context
  • Apply critical understanding of ethnographic, narrative and arts-based approaches as used in the discipline

Assessment Information

Formative assessment:

Individual/Group presentation using an ethnographic, narrative or arts-based method.

Summative assessment:

Qualitative research design assignment (4,000 words)
