This unit investigates the complex debates which have surrounded constructions of German identity since 1800, ranging from the uncertainties about Germany's territorial expanse, the often awkward relationships between the separate states which make up the German Kulturnation, and the difficulties which underpin the construction of national memory through historiography, literature, museums and memorials. The unit considers the approaches of different German states to these issues from the nineteenth century to the present, with reference to historical, literary, cultural and political sources.
