Description including Unit Aims

This unit consists of two parts. The first part, 'Switch mode power supplies (SMPS)', covers the operation, analysis and design techniques of various SMPS’s and their applications. The second part, 'Electric Power Systems', covers how to analyse power systems and the synchronous machines that connect to these systems.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The unit gives the student a good understanding of how power flow is managed in a three phase system, including stability under transient conditions, calculation under fault and unbalanced conditions. Switched mode power supplies are studied in detail so that the student should be able to undertake the design of power supplies in all the main topologies. Operation of synchronous machines within power systems will be understood. Reluctance and brushless DC machines, together with the principle power electronic circuits required to control them, will be understood.
