The Unit aims to build on the previous years’ Dentist in Society teaching and to foster an understanding of the NHS system. It also aims to give students experience of undertaking research and reporting on findings.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The Dentist in Society

At the end of this unit a successful student will be able to:

  • describe and discuss the legal regulations surrounding the provision of dental care in the community and also the rights and the responsibilities of those working with, and employing, dental care professionals

Elective Reporting

At the end of this unit a successful student will be able to:

  • Work to identified aims and objectives and illustrate the extent to which these have been met
  • Illustrate the findings or key points using the most effective graphical, pictorial or tabular format
  • Where appropriate, analyse data using statistical methods and evaluate data and scientific evidence to draw appropriate conclusions
  • Where appropriate, provide a clear account of an observational study, explaining the role of the institute/charity/practice observed and how this fits with national/international oral healthcare provision
  • Where appropriate, generate an extensive and detailed review of relevant literature, evaluating the quality of research, summarising the research field and identifying where further investigation is required
  • Present written work clearly and concisely and demonstrate consistent and accurate referencing
  • Prepare and present an effective PowerPoint presentation and respond well to questions, illustrating an in-depth understanding and awareness of the subject area

The Portfolio Reflective Account will enable students to identify the extent to which they have met the learning outcomes above and the ways in which the elective project has had an impact on their own attitudes, thoughts and behavior as a dental care professional.
