Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to expand students’ knowledge on the roles of accounting in society. The course draws on accounting research that examines topics on a range of societal issues [including, social, ethics and environmental responsibility, (past and modern) slavery, human rights, catastrophe, culture, (in) equality and diversity]. The course will provide students with the opportunity to critically evaluate research, theories and practice on these important topics.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate the theoretical lens that underpin the research on social accounting.
  2. Develop a critical understanding of accounting and accountability as concepts.
  3. Critically evaluate the role of accounting in transforming and sustaining organisations, institutions, and society.

Assessment Information

The formative assessment is a 1,500 words individual essay.

The summative assessment is a closed-book, one-and-a-half hours examination (100% of total marks). (This assesses all ILOs)
