Description including Unit Aims

The unit aims to give students a full understanding of the major hydrological and hydrochemical processes that prevail in glacier systems. It also aims to demonstrate the importance of glacier hydrology in regulating ice dynamics. The element covers theoretical work, on glacier hydrology and hydrochemistry, and explains how more recent field studies have tested these theoretical hypotheses on smaller valley glaciers. The unit concludes with a discussion of how hydrological and hydrochemical regimes may vary within glaciers of contrasting thermal regime and scale, and the field observations that presently underpin our knowledge. Field measurement and monitoring techniques are a major theme of the unit.
