Description including Unit Aims

Enhancement of analysis methods for plate, shell and sandwich structures and understanding of advanced materials and industrial applications.

To enhance the understanding and selection of materials for advanced applications and appreciate the practical issues relating to aerospace structures.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to: • understand plate bending and buckling phenomena; • apply the basic equations of continuum mechanics to stress analysis problems; • understand design issues and be able to analyse sandwich panels; • select appropriate materials for advanced applications; • appreciate practical industrial issues related to aerospace structures.
