Description including Unit Aims

This module will further develop and expand the students understanding of periodontal disease and its management. Students will develop greater clinical skills and manipulation of dental instrumentation and the use of dental materials used within their remit.

Aims:

Be competent in sub gingival scaling techniques utilising hand and mechanical scaling instruments

  • Be competent in the placement of the temporary dressings and selection of appropriate dental materials.
  • Have knowledge of the science that underpins the dental biomaterials used by the Dental Hygienist
  • Have knowledge of the limitations of such dental biomaterials
  • Be familiar with those aspects of biomaterials that relate to the work of the Dental Hygienist

Intended Learning Outcomes

Assessment Information

Formative assessment is carried out by written tests and clinical skills assessments/OSCEs for each clinical component. Summative assessment for this unit is via the periodontal preclinical exam:

Periodontal Pre clinical examinations: Prior to treating patients students must complete course work and practical techniques on manikin heads and pass a preclinical exam.

These examinations will take place in December of the first year.

Format for Periodontal Pre clinical Examination :

  1. Pre clinical skills; practical assessment on manikin heads
  2. 1 hour written paper

Pass mark: 50%

This summative assessment is weighted 50% practical 50% written paper
