This is a compulsory unit for the CDT students to undertake as part of the 8-month PACT course. The unit (in conjunction with RBS2 & RBS3) is designed to give students lab-based experience of 3-different areas of chemical research before they choose their PhD project and supervisors. The 3-sabbaticals (3 x 9 weeks) will be chosen on the basis of each student's particular background on admission to the centre, thus building maximum breadth into his or her formative CDT experience.
The reports should demonstrate that the student has obtained a real understanding of subject matter that is beyond their prior experience. The supervisors and 2nd assessors (i.e. Director or Course Manager) will be looking for real evidence that students have absorbed the new techniques and have become practically adept and independent.
Research lab based tenures - 3.5 days per week x 9 weeks.
For each RBS, students will be required to write a 3-4 page report in the style of a Journal Communication as well as 6-20 pages of supplementary experimental information. This will be submitted to the RBS supervisor as a mock journal submission. The supervisor will then assess this paper as a mock editor and mark it according to a pro-forma. The Director or Course Manager will second mark the work to ensure integrity and consistency across the board. The marks and comments will then be presented to the Exam Board at the 8-month progress assessment.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
