Aims: To enable students to integrate and apply knowledge of engineering theory and detailed design from Year 1 to 3 to the conceptual design of civil engineering projects. The unit will be based around projects taken from a variety of civil engineering areas, drawing on actual projects where possible (with the support of local practitioners).
All the exercises will be limited to scheme design stage working with real data which will be conflicting and require engineering judgement to progress design. The exercises will be carried out in short time periods similar to those that would be available in industry.
The aim of each exercise is for the students to produce a feasible design to satisfy the brief, which could be costed. There is not a unique ‘correct’ solution but a number of possible solutions for which the students will need to assess the "best" solution and articulate why.
By the end of the course, successful students will be able to;
1. Process and analyse conflicting data and determine appropriate design parameters, whilst recognising the risks associated with this process.
2. Have successfully participated in the design of broad civil engineering projects and apply knowledge and skills to the formulation and selection of viable conceptual designs,
3. Articulate the design through the correct use of technical reports, calculations and drawings,
4. Work effectively as a group to collaboratively produce project work within predefined and limited timescales.
Dam design exercise to be taught in weeks 1 and 2 of TB1, whilst no other units are being taught. This will require extended access to computer lab and some lectures in flat bed classrooms during these two weeks.
Other exercises to be taught in a mixture of 2, 4 and 8 hour sessions in TB1/2. These exercises will not require access to computer labs but will need flat bed classrooms.
