Description including Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to encourage students to explore a contemporary issue in health professional education that is relevant to them, but to explore it in the context of a bigger picture. The aim of this bigger picture approach is to learn from other disciplines and to contextualise issues that arise in professional education.

Aims:

1. To explore contemporary issues in health care professions’ education

2. To contextualise those issues within a ‘big picture’

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the unit students will have:

1. investigated a contemporary and relevant issue in health professions’ education

2. contextualised the issue in a wider framework (for example, historical or socio-cultural or political)

3. identified implications for practice of resent research on this issues

4. critically read a range of contemporary research and literature

5. presented their findings to peers

6. undertaken peer review and assessment

Teaching Information

Teaching is through interactive online activities icebreaker, discussion, role play, games) and online supported discussion and tasks.

Presentations will be online.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be undertaken throughout the teaching of the unit and in on-line elements.

Formative assessment: contribution to online discussion and wiki, draft abstract.

Summative: presentation to peers (with tutor and peer assessment), 500 word abstract for presentation and 500 word reflection on process.

This will necessarily change but key journals used are Medical Education, Medical Teacher, BMJ and other specialty related journals.
