Description including Unit Aims

No Roman writer matches Ovid in the persistence and extent of his influence on subsequent literature and art. Exploring Ovid’s influence upon literature, art history, and film, this unit will track — and seek to explain — that influence. We will revisit a selection of Ovid’s most infamous characters (Narcissus, Orpheus, Philomela, Actaeon – among others) and examine their afterlives in Shakespeare, Picasso, Cocteau – and beyond.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• On successful completion of this unit students will have (1) developed an introductory knowledge and understanding of a canonical classical writer’s influence upon literature, art history, and film. (2) developed and practised skills in reading and evaluating ancient literary texts. (3) developed and practised skills in reading and analysing early modern and modern works of classical reception. (4) demonstrated the ability to identify and evaluate pertinent evidence/data in order to illustrate/demonstrate a cogent argument.
