COMPULSORY UNIT FOR THOSE STARTING THE CERTIFICATE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 2017
Aims: This unit will provide learners with a thorough understanding of writing effective learning objectives and employing a challenging range of teaching methods.
It will also incorporate elements of the programme’s three vertical themes:
Description: This unit will build on and develop elements of the core unit Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions”. It will focus on your skills in writing learning outcomes/ objectives and competencies. It will also extend your knowledge of varied teaching methods and how to choose appropriate methods for your learning objectives as well as how these relate to educational theory.
By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:
1. Explore the theory and practice of objectives, competencies and learning goals.
2. Explore a range of teaching methods in relation to the evidence base for teaching and learning.
3. Incorporate relevant learning theory into your own practice.
Teaching methods will be drawn from a wide range of approaches including: small group styles, lecture, discussion, debate, presentations, case studies, role play, interactive whole-class teaching, tasks which apply new learning, video critique, distance and e-learning elements.
1500-2000 words or equivalent in other media.
Summative: a critical analysis of a teaching session with reference to educational theory.
Formative: group and individual feedback plus online activities.
If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.
If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. TLHPM0003).
How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.
See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.
Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
