Description

In this unit students will learn the basic transferrable skills necessary to effectively execute and communicate research; these key skills will underpin the programme modules that follow.

The unit is an introduction to academic work, and in it students will develop the basic skills needed to access the scientific literature, to manage their research and to present their work at postgraduate level. Students will also start to practise and acquire the underlying research methods necessary for the planning and execution of a programme of research starting from finding relevant scientific literature, through to writing up and presenting research outcomes in different forms (e.g. posters, formal presentations).

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this module, the successful student will be able to:

M1.1 search for, collate and synthesize relevant scientific information, using the library and ICT tools;

M1.2 read, interpret and critique academic and technical literature;

M1.3 describe how a research project should be organised, explaining what is required at each stage of the process;

M1.4 present the results of their work using appropriate oral or written methods and visualisation techniques.

Teaching details

The teaching in this unit comprises formal lectures interspersed with seminars and group work.

Assessment Details

This unit will be assessed by a written report (60%), a presentation (30%) and a mind map (10%). Formative feedback is provided throughout the unit during the seminars and group work."
