Description

This module will detail the steps required to assess a patient for their suitability for implant treatment and arrive at a provisional diagnosis. The further special tests and information which may be required to arrive at a final diagnosis and the development of a treatment plan. Aspects to be covered will include the consideration of the patient's expectations, medical history and contraindications to dental implant treatment.

Intended learning outcomes

  • To have a knowledge of the stages involved in assessing a patient for dental implant treatment.
  • To have a knowledge of the stages involved in developing a treatment plan and issues relating to the communication of this plan to a patient.
  • To have a knowledge of medical history relevant to implant treatment.

Teaching details

Lectures and small group teaching. Distance learning package delivered via Blackboard including additional podcast lectures/videos and directed reading.

This unit runs concurrently with the Clinical Practice attachment Unit and is closely linked with it, teaching is therefore supplemented by one to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.

Methods of assessment - Summative and formative

Formative assessment

During the study day via direct verbal feedback, particularly during group treatment planning sessions.

Summative Assessments

Written assignments:

1. Treatment planning case study. Structured written assignment of real patient case, highlighting patient assessment and treatment planning skills. 50% of unit mark

2.Case presentation. Case presentation of a patient case. 50% of unit mark

Total 100% of unit marks.

Submission date will be given to students verbally and on Blackboard.
