The aim of the Group Project is to give students experience of working in a team on a substantial design project. A team consists of four or five students, who must allocate the work amongst themselves.

Though the target application/subject matter may vary between groups, each of these projects will contain similar elements. Each will be structured in the same manner to encourage consideration of technical innovation, delivery of a system to a given specification, risk, management of work and demonstration of a working "product" on a specific date.

Intended learning outcomes

Having completed the project successfully, students will be able to:

  1. Use a project objective or outline document to form a product or project specification document giving detail to the end goal
  2. Use the project specification document to brainstorm in teams and form an outline project plan
  3. Assign team members tasks that match their interests and capabilities and form a more detailed task based plan
  4. Continually evaluate progress against the project specification and review task assignment appropriately
  5. Use and extend previously taught content to solve problems set out on the project specification document
  6. Periodically prioritise tasks and aspects of project specification to optimise use of constrained time and skill base.
  7. Manage areas of risk appropriately
  8. Use team working tools available (be they paper, computer or internet based) to simplify communication of progress, problems, etc.
  9. Tackle large-scale projects in a team setting;
  10. Handle the difficulties faced by team leaders;
  11. Explain specific technical topics in the degree programme.
  12. Describe (from experience) a full specify, brainstorm, design, model, build, test and release cycle for a product (or sub-systems of that product)
  13. Report the design process for subsystems and entire product
  14. Present specific aspects of the design including its associated philosophy, challenges and solutions using a poster format.
  15. Recall, research and comply with the relevant standards for the product being designed.
