Description

This unit aims to teach students to design and conduct good quality research in human reproduction and early development. Candidates will be able to select a topic or design their project in collaboration with their personal supervisor and/or co-supervisor.

This unit aims to introduce the student to research methods and presentation; topics will range from practical laboratory-based projects to audit of clinical studies.

Aims:

Deliver seminars within a workshop environment describing study design, background literature searching, current presentation techniques and computer skills employed in scientific research, supplemented with practical demonstrations of oral and poster presentation skills. Critical review of the literature and analysis of data. Using distance-learning techniques (such as Internet and e-mail) for online conferencing, receipt of written drafts and final dissertations, as well as telephone and personal tutorials for ongoing assessments.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • undertake a literature search in their field of study
  • design and undertake a research project
  • analyse data and present findings and defend this work during oral examination.

Part 1: Short Review Project Assessment – 5000 - 7000 word report

(30% of the RED07 Project Unit mark: 25% for the written review & 5% for presentation)

Part 2: 4,000-5,000 words derived from or related to Part 1. Can take the form of: 1) clinical audit, 2) a systematic review, 3) data analysis, or 4) a short project grant application. 40%

Poster presentation and oral examination. 30%
