Description

This Unit of Teaching will take place in Year-4 and will comprise the following three Elements and their general aims:

Restorative Skills Year 4

During Term 2 students will attend the Clinical Skills Laboratory where they will gain experience in the diagnosis, treatment planning and provision of advanced restorations including inlays, onlays, post crowns, veneers, adhesive bridges and conventional bridges.

Supplementary aims are:

To introduce students to the fundamental clinical and practical concepts associated with the design, provision and maintenance of fixed bridges and their effect on the periodontium.

To introduce students to the fundamental concepts of occlusion and how this influences the design of dental restorations.

To demonstrate the importance of the relationship of, and develop links between, the clinical management of patients and laboratory procedures. During Term 3 students will become familiar with the simple and complex management options of patients with periodontal diseases, including antimicrobial regimen.

Supplementary aims are:

To provide students with experience of simple periodontal surgery techniques

To provide knowledge of current thinking with implant placement in the periodontally compromised patient, and periodontal and bone regeneration techniques

To familiarise students with treatment planning for restorative patients who have periodontal disease

Dental pain and Anxiety Management Year 4: Conscious Sedation

The aim is:

To provide an introduction to the attitude, knowledge and skills required to practice conscious sedation in dentistry in preparation for supervised clinical practice

Dental Radiography Year 4

The aim is:

To consolidate and expand the radiography skills and knowledge acquired in Dental Radiography Year 3.

Intended learning outcomes

Restorative Skills

Term 2

Students should obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

  1. The consequences of tooth loss and the anatomy in relation to prosthetic dentistry.
  2. The principles of crown preparation techniques for the restoration of a tooth.

The student should acquire the skills and attributes necessary for:

  1. Restoring the dentition using the principle of minimal intervention, to a standard that promotes the longevity of the restoration.
  2. Managing restorative procedures that preserve tooth structure, replace missing or defective tooth structure, maintain function, are aesthetic and long lasting, and promote soft and hard tissue health
  3. Determining the prognosis and undertaking appropriate non-surgical treatments to manage pulpal and periradicular disease for uncomplicated permanent teeth.
  4. Assessing an edentulous patient, defining a treatment plan and bringing the stages of the prosthetic treatment plan to a successful conclusion.

Term 3

Knowledge

Students should obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

  1. When and how to prescribe appropriate anti-microbial therapy in the management of plaque related diseases.
  2. The diagnosis and treatment planning of care for patients who present with periodontal diseases and recognising those patients for whom basic periodontal surgery or advanced periodontal techniques are indicated.
  3. Implants in the periodontal patient, including the management of peri-implantitis.

Dental Pain and Anxiety Management: Conscious Sedation

Knowledge

  1. assessment and treatment planning of patients who require conscious sedation
  2. techniques of inhalation and intravenous sedation
  3. clinical and electromechanical monitoring of patients treated with basic sedation techniques

Attitudes

  1. Recognise the importance of conscious sedation in the management of pain and anxiety in dentistry
  2. Use effective communication skills in the management of patients requiring conscious sedation for dentistry
  3. To take a critical and caring approach to the management of the anxious dental patient

Dental Radiography

Knowledge

  1. Apply evidence based selection criteria to justify a radiographic exposure.

Skills

  1. Competently undertake routine dental radiography and adapt techniques to suit different patients.
  2. Use both digital and film based intra-oral radiography systems
  3. Use both direct and indirect digital panoramic units.

Attitudes

  1. To strive to obtain good quality radiographs for patients, utilising quality assurance procedures.
  2. Apply effective communication skills in the management of patients undergoing radiography.

Assessment Details

Element of Restorative Skills

Term 2

Summative:

  1. Practical assessment in Crown and Bridge that would involve simulated clinical work - 80% of the final Unit mark.
  2. Practical assessment – must-pass.

Element of Dental pain and Anxiety Management: Conscious Sedation

Term 2

Summative:

An e-Assessment that will contribute 15% of the Unit mark.

Element of Dental Radiography

Summative

  1. Continuous assessment grades from clinical sessions (This will contribute 5% of the Unit mark).
  2. Must-pass practical assessments.

Formative assessment

  1. A computerised test on extra-oral radiography is taken at an time for each student.

Students must achieve a pass mark in all three elements in this Unit.
