Year 1:

This unit introduces and develops clinical skills and is based initially within Bristol Dental Hospital clinical skills laboratory.

Subject Areas:

1. Patient Assessment and Indices (including dental charting)
2. Periodontal Instrumentation and techniques
3. Stain Removal
4. Pain and Anxiety control
5. Medical Emergencies
6. Decontamination procedures

Clinical skills include the assessment and monitoring of periodontal disease and plaque biofilm, non-surgical periodontal therapy incorporating the use of Local Anaesthetics as required and encouraging patients towards healthy oral hygiene regimes. This unit includes the practical implementation of
decontamination procedures in the dental surgery.

Aims:

• To provide necessary tuition in the pre-clinical setting that will prepare the student for clinical practice on patients
• To gain an understanding and application of different types of instruments available to treat chronic gingival and periodontal disease for chronic gingival and periodontal disease
• Be competent in relevant methods of pain and anxiety control

Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss the importance of each component of the patient assessment process
2. Identify and apply different assessment methods available for plaque control, screening and assessment for gingival and periodontal disease
3. Recognise the clinical presentation of gingival and periodontal disease
4. Identify gingival and periodontal pockets, mobility, furcations and recession by applying relevant instruments appropriately, explaining the theoretical principles of preventive care
5. Provide patients with comprehensive and accurate preventive education and instruction in a manner which encourages self-care and motivation
6. Demonstrate safe local anaesthetic techniques
7. Have an understanding of how to deal with medical emergencies.
8. Undertake prescribed non-surgical treatment to remove hard and soft deposits and stains using a range of methods.
9. Implement and perform effective decontamination and infection control procedures according to current guidelines

Teaching will use a blended learning approach delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities. Students will be expected to engage with all learning.

Assessment Information

Summative assessment 1. Clinical skills OSCE (100% OF TOTAL UNIT) Students will be required to demonstrate clinical techniques including LA technique, ultrasonic, indices and medical emergencies, 1 hour. Must-pass Formative Assessments 1. Periodontology instrument competence assessment Assessment of practical competence in the use of periodontal instruments 2. Clinical competence assessments Assessment of key skills required to progress to treat first patients Formative assessment Students are supported in their learning by a variety of directed formative assessments in the clinical Skills Laboratory with which they must engage within this unit. Overall performance will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee at regular meetings x 1 per term. Marks obtained in formative assessments above do not contribute to the overall unit mark but failure to complete by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee, and may be a barrier to progression
