Description including Unit Aims
The unit:
- focuses upon the relationship between the various activities of Christian worship and Christian theology and spirituality;
- will draw upon insights from the human sciences as well as theological studies;
- seeks to integrate the students' understanding of worship - which will be gained from experience of both leadership of, and participation in, public worship - with principles arising from the practice of Christian worship;
- will be rooted in the application of principles to the practice of leading, planning and reflecting upon acts of worship in various contexts;
- will address the interplay between worship and mission in current contexts.
The unit aims to introduce students to the theory and practice of worship with a specific focus on the leadership of worship.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the unit students should:
- be able to relate the activities of Christian worship to theology;
- have developed an understanding of the place of ritual, symbolism, space and music in the context of worship;
- be able to apply principles to the practice and planning of worship;
- be able to reflect on their practice as leaders of worship in the context of mission.
Teaching Information
Teaching will be through lectures and seminars.
Assessment Information
Formative assessment will be through evidence of having completed preparatory reading for classes and participation in classes and seminars with tutor feedback.
Summative assessment will comprise a 2,500 word essay critically reflecting on an experience of participating as a leader in worship.
