Description including Unit Aims

Description: This unit is the hands-on partner to the numerical analysis component of EMAT20200 Engineering Mathematics 2. It is both an introduction to the industry-standard computer package Matlab, and also to the practical implementation of numerical methods, and their application to real-world problems.

Aims: The aim of this unit is to give students practical experience of implementing numerical methods using Matlab.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Be fluent in the use of Matlab, including an understanding of matrices as the fundamental data-storage unit, array manipulation, control flow, script and function m-files, function handles, graphical output,
  2. Use the in-built Matlab ODE solvers appropriately, including an understanding of choice of solver, control of accuracy, event detection
  3. Use Matlab for root-finding, both using user-created and inbuilt routines
  4. Practically implement interpolation and approximation methods in Matlab
  5. Be able to integrate functions of both one and many variables, paying particular attention to special cases such as interpolating or approximating functions derived from data, both using built-in and user-defined routines
  6. Understand stability and error-propagation in numerical methods
